Michael Smith
Michael Smith, second trumpet of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra since 2006, will serve as acting principal trumpet of the CSO for the 2009/2010 season. In addition to the CSO, Michael has also performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra Sinfonica de Guanajuato. Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2000 where he was a student of Robert Sullivan. (currently Principal Trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra) He received the award for Excellence in Brass Performance upon graduation. Also in 2000, Michael was selected as a fellow to the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan under the musical direction of Charles Dutoit. Michael is also very active as a music educator. He held a position at the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College from 2000 to 2006. Currently, Michael is on the adjunct trumpet faculty at the College of Charleston and enjoys teaching the talented young trumpeters of Charleston, South Carolina privately. Michael enjoys spending his free time with his wife Mayumi and their daughter, Mion, as well as the occasional round of golf.
